I think this song means that life goes on, people have to move, make new friends but we won't forget about all the friendships we have made and the people who have helped us. Here's some lyrics that go with my definition: 'It's been fun, but now I have to go'.' and 'Life is a trip down the road that leads you' is basically saying life is a big adventure and things change, and we have to go with the flow, explore it.
I think it’s about him having such a fun time with his friend that he is wondering when they can see each other again and wondering if they can do something similar to what they were doing before.
I think this is not so much about an old friend he lost contact with, but maybe a new friend he just made. At the beginning, when it says,
'Switch on the sky and the stars glow for you
Go see the world 'cause it's all so brand new
Don’t close your eyes 'cause your future's ready to shine
It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly', he is telling his friend that they are really special and they are going to do amazing things when they get older.
'Welcome to the rhythm of the night
There's something in the air you can't deny'
But they don't have to worry about the future so soon. Just feel the music and have fun and dance; live in the moment. They're having so much fun.
'Well, it's been fun but now I've got to go
Life is way too short to take it slow
But before I go and hit the road
I gotta know, til then,
When can I see you again?'
He has had a really fun night with his friend and wants to do it again sometime soon. So, not really sad saying, oh goodbye, maybe eventually we'll see each other in many years, but more like next week or so they can go have fun again.
'Joined at the hip, yeah your sidekick needs you
Life is a trip down the road that leads you'
His new friend has other friends that rely on them, and he knows that his friend has to go to them, but he also knows that things change and life leads you in many places, so maybe they'll be able to hang out often.
'Look all around at the mountains you haven't climbed
It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly'
There's so much left to do, and they will figure out how to work out their friendship.
The song continues along those lines, asking their new friend to hang out again soon.
It is him after a great night with a girl he likes, wanting to know when they can do it again.
I think it is about an old friend who he lost contact with.
I feel that this song is written for Taylor Swift. Cause previously he said that he like Taylor Swift and her songs. But however, they didnt managed to keep in contact with each other and he wrote this song wondering when he will see Taylor again.
The lyrics describes the success or maybe fame of a friend and because of it, they have to be separated or move away. That's why the lines 'When can i see you again' are redundant. Like the movie Wreck It Ralph, After everything is settled in Vanellope's world, wreck it ralph has to go back to his game and wonders when he gets to see his friend again.
