Ok so Recently I purchased a xbox 360 wireless reciver for windows. so I plug it in, windows tells me it cant find drivers, so I go to microsoft.com and download the xbox 360 wireless controller .exe file, I run it. I let it work, then about 10 secs in it tells me: an expectend error occured, try again, and closes. I tried it six times, doesn't work, so I look around and I find forum posts that tell me to do this:
Right click on Computer
Go to Properties
Click on Device Manager
Right click on the Unidentified Device
Go to Properties
Go to the Drive tab
Click on Update Driver…
Browse my computer for driver software
Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
Windows Common Controller for Window Class <----------I cant find this I only found Microsoft Common controller for windows class.
Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]<----------I only could find XBOX 360 Controller for Windows

I have the same issue with my controller. I have found a not very practical or safe work-around. I don't really think it is a viable solution but it might help you figure our how to solve this problem with Mac OS 10.13.4 (at least that's the one I have and the controller doesn't work with usb..).

- Reboot into Recovery Mode (Command-R at Reboot)
- Disable SIP (Enter 'csrutil disable' in terminal in Recovery Mode)
- Reboot
- Run Steam & install the component (successfully)
- Quit, Reboot into Recovery mode (Command-R at Reboot)
- Enable SIP (Enter 'csrutil enable' in Terminal)
- Reboot and Enjoy your updated controller.

I thought there could be a similar issue for the xbox 360 driver and it seems like it is! As long as the SIP is disabled you can properly install and use the driver (the controller works again) and as soon as you enable it and reboot the controller stops working. It seems like it is a security issue within Mac OS? I don't really understand any of it but it works :-)
